How to wash packing cubes without wrecking them

Packing cubes take on travel grime — dust from a bag's bottom, a leaked toiletry, and the inevitable dirty-clothes cube. The good news is they're easy to clean; the trap is that heat is their enemy. Most cubes are polyester or nylon, and the single fastest way to ruin one is the dryer. Here's the safe routine, from a quick spot-clean to a full wash.

Know your fabric first

Almost all packing cubes are polyester or nylon (often ripstop), sometimes with a mesh panel. Both handle water fine but hate high heat, which can warp the shape, stress the seams and melt coatings. Check the care tag if there is one; when in doubt, treat the cube as hand-wash, air-dry. The everyday spot-clean

For a small stain or a bit of grime, you don't need a full wash. Wipe the spot with a cloth dampened in warm water and a drop of mild soap, blot, and let it air-dry. This handles 90% of cube cleaning and is gentler on the fabric than a full soak.

Hand-washing (the safe default)

For a proper clean, hand-washing is the safest method for any cube:

1. Fill a sink or tub with lukewarm water and a little mild detergent.
2. Turn the cube inside out (so the interior and seams get clean) and submerge it.
3. Agitate gently and use a soft brush on stubborn spots — don't scrub hard.
4. Rinse thoroughly until no suds remain.
5. Press out water (don't wring hard) and hang or lay flat to air-dry.

Can you machine-wash packing cubes?

Often yes, with care — but hand-washing is always safer, and premium brands sometimes advise against the machine. If you do use it: cold water, gentle cycle, and place the cube in a mesh laundry bag to protect the zippers and the drum. Zip the cube closed first so the zipper pull doesn't snag. Skip fabric softener, which can coat and degrade technical fabrics.

The one rule: never tumble-dry

This is the step that wrecks cubes. Dryer heat warps the box shape, weakens seams, and can damage water-resistant coatings and zippers. Always air-dry — hang mesh-top cubes to drip and lay structured cubes flat to keep their shape. They dry fast because the fabric is thin.

Keeping them cleaner between washes
