The best packing cubes for carry-on luggage

Carry-on packing is a space problem, so this list favors cubes that fit a cabin bag, stack flat, and — where it helps — compress. Every pick is sized with the 40-liter bag in mind.

Carry-on packing is a space problem before it's an organization problem. A standard cabin bag is roughly 40 liters, and once you've committed to not checking a bag, every cube has to earn its room. So this list leans toward cubes that fit a cabin bag cleanly, stack flat to use the depth, and — for bulky loads — compress. It is a different shortlist from a checked-bag list, and deliberately so.

What makes a cube carry-on-friendly

  • Sized to the bag.The cube's longest dimension has to sit flat across your bag's interior. A cube that won't lie flat wastes more room than it saves.
  • Stacks flat. Slim cubes tessellate and leave room to slot shoes and a toiletry bag into the gaps — see the how-many-fit-a-carry-on math.
  • Compresses, if your clothes do. For soft, bulky loads, a compression cube frees up real space in a bag that has none to spare.

The short version

Most carry-on packers should get the Bagail 8-set (value, mesh visibility) or the Gonex compression set (if you pack bulky and need the space). Minimalists who pack thin layers should look at slim cubes. If you want a single, superb do-everything cube, the Peak Design Medium compresses on its own. Confirm each cube's dimensions against your specific bag before buying — sizes aren't standardized (the sizes guide has the chart).

How we picked

We haven't tested these on a plane — and we say so

Every site in this category says it tested twenty cubes. We haven't tested any. We compiled the published manufacturer specs, computed the numbers that decide the buy — capacity, compression, cost per cube — and scored each set against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research, not measurements we took. Where a figure came from a manufacturer's spec sheet we name it in Sources. Prices are pulled live from Amazon.

Questions

Frequently asked

How many packing cubes fit in a carry-on?

A standard ~40-liter carry-on comfortably holds a 3-cube set (small, medium, large) plus shoes and a toiletry bag in the gaps. Slim cubes let you fit a fourth by stacking flat. See our full breakdown in the how-many guide.

Should I use compression cubes for a carry-on?

If you pack soft, bulky clothes (jackets, sweaters, lots of t-shirts), yes — compression frees up space a cabin bag doesn't have to spare. If you pack mostly dense items like jeans, compression does little, so save the weight and money.

Do packing cubes make a carry-on TSA-friendly?

Cubes don't change screening rules, but they help you pack neatly and repack fast if a bag is opened. Keep liquids in a separate quart bag per TSA rules — a cube is not a substitute for the liquids bag.

Sources & how we got these numbers

We do not run a testing lab, and we do not pretend to. Every dimension, capacity and compression figure traces to the manufacturer's own spec or listing; prices come live from Amazon. Where we couldn't verify something, we say so on the page rather than quietly leaving it out. Read our full method.
