How many packing cubes do I need?

It depends on trip length and how you sort, not on a magic number. Here's a chart by trip and bag, and the honest answer to 'how many fit in a carry-on.'

For most trips, three to four cubes is the sweet spot: one for tops, one for bottoms, one small for underwear and socks, and often one for tech or toiletries. You scale the sizes, not the number, as the trip gets longer — a week and a weekend can use the same three cubes, just larger ones. Here is the breakdown.

Cube count by trip length

This assumes one traveler doing laundry roughly weekly, packing a normal mix of clothes. Sort by category (tops / bottoms / small items), then add a cube only when a category overflows.

TripCubesA workable set
Weekend (2–3 days)21 medium (tops + bottoms) + 1 small (underwear, socks, tech)
Long weekend (4–5 days)31 medium tops + 1 medium bottoms + 1 small
One week (7 days)3–41 large tops + 1 medium bottoms + 1 small + optional tech/toiletry cube
Two weeks (with laundry)4Same as a week — pack for a week and do laundry, not double the cubes
Two weeks (no laundry)4–62 large tops + 1 large bottoms + small items + a dirty-clothes cube

The pattern: past about a week, add laundry, not cubes. Doubling cubes to avoid a laundry run usually means checking a bag you could have carried on.

How many packing cubes fit in a carry-on?

A standard carry-on (roughly a 40-liter cabin bag) comfortably holds a 3-cube set — small, medium, large— plus room for shoes and a toiletry bag in the gaps. Four slim or compression cubes can fit if you square them up, but you lose the flexibility to slot shoes around them. If you're packing carry-on only, aim for three cubes sized to the bag rather than four cubes fighting for the same space. Our carry-on roundup picks sets sized to fit a cabin bag.

Two travelers, one bag

Sharing a checked bag? Give each person their own set in a different color rather than combining. Color-coding by person beats sorting by category when two people share — you each pull your own cubes and never rummage through someone else's clothes.

The short version

Three cubes handles most trips; scale their sizefor longer ones and add laundry past a week. When you're ready to buy, the sizes guide shows exactly what each size holds, and the roundup ranks sets by trip.

Questions

Frequently asked

How many packing cubes do I need for a week?

Three to four: one large cube for tops, one medium for bottoms, one small for underwear and socks, and optionally a small tech or toiletry cube. Past a week, plan a laundry run instead of adding cubes.

How many packing cubes fit in a carry-on?

A standard ~40-liter carry-on comfortably holds a 3-cube set (small, medium, large) plus shoes and a toiletry bag in the gaps. You can fit four slim cubes if you square them up, but you lose room to slot shoes around them.

Do I need a packing cube for every day of the trip?

No — sort by category, not by day. One cube per category (tops, bottoms, small items) scales with size, so a weekend and a week can use the same layout with different-sized cubes.

We do not run a testing lab, and we do not pretend to. Every dimension, capacity and compression figure traces to the manufacturer's own spec or listing; prices come live from Amazon. Where we couldn't verify something, we say so on the page rather than quietly leaving it out. Read our full method.
