How do compression packing cubes work?

A compression packing cube looks almost identical to a regular one, and the difference is a single feature: a second zipper. Pack the cube, close the main zipper as usual, then run the second zipper around the outside and it collapses the cube smaller, squeezing trapped air out of your clothes. That is the entire mechanism — no vacuum, no pump, no magic. Understanding exactly what that air removal does (and does not do) is the key to knowing whether compression is worth it for how you pack.
The mechanism: a second zipper
A regular cube has one zipper that closes it. A compression cube adds a second zipper set into an expansion panel — usually a strip of fabric that gives the cube extra depth when open. You fill the cube with the main zipper closed, then pull the compression zipper, which draws the top and bottom panels together and flattens the whole cube. Because the fabric is not stretchy, the volume it loses has to come out of the air gaps between your clothes. That is why the cube gets noticeably thinner as you zip: you are physically forcing out the air the clothes were holding.
What air removal actually does
Clothes take up space in two ways: the fabric itself, and the air trapped in and between the folds. Compression can only remove the second kind. It cannot shrink the fabric — a sweater is made of the same amount of wool before and after — but it can collapse the loft, the puffy air pockets that make soft clothes bulky. How much space does it save?
Honestly, it depends entirely on your clothes, and any fixed percentage you see quoted is marketing, not physics. On soft, lofty items — down jackets, sweaters, fleece, a week of t-shirts — compression reclaims a genuinely useful chunk of a bag, because those items are mostly air. On dense items — jeans, packed toiletry kits, shoes, books — it does close to nothing, because there is almost no air to remove. So the useful way to think about it is not "X percent smaller" but "as much smaller as your clothes are compressible." Pack a bag full of bulky layers and compression is transformative; pack a bag of dense items and the second zipper mostly adds weight.
When it helps and when it doesn't
- Helps most: bulky, soft, air-holding clothes; cold-weather layers; fitting more into a fixed carry-on you refuse to check.
- Helps least: dense clothes like jeans; already-thin summer wardrobes; trips where you have space to spare and only want organization.
