The best packing cubes for a family

Family travel changes the problem cubes solve. For one person, cubes are about packing the same way every trip. For a family, they're about telling whose clothes are whose — so the six-year-old's socks don't end up buried under a parent's sweaters, and nobody has to unpack the whole bag to find one swimsuit. The single best move is to assign a color (or a size) to each person and give them their own cubes. That means you want a set with enough pieces and enough distinct colors to go around.

The one-color-per-person system

Hand each family member a color. Their tops, bottoms and small items live in cubes of that color, so anyone can pull their own without digging through someone else's. What matters for a family set

• Piece count. You need roughly two to three cubes per person. A 10-piece set covers a family of four; an 8-piece covers two or three travelers comfortably.
• Distinct colors or sizes. The system only works if cubes are telling apart at a glance. Multi-color sets make color-coding trivial.
