Methodology
How we research and rank
The honest version of what a "best packing cubes" ranking can be when nobody owns a test lab. This is exactly what we do, so you can check our work.
What we do
We compile the published specifications for every cube we cover — dimensions, set size, materials, zipper and compression details, warranty — from the manufacturer's own product pages and retailer listings. From those specs we compute the numbers that actually decide a purchase and that competitors don't publish:
- Cost per cube. The live Amazon price divided by the marketed set size. It's reproducible from the listing, and it's the single fastest way to compare value across sets of different sizes. We show it live on every product card.
- Compression, honestly bounded. Where a cube compresses, we describe what it reclaims and on which clothes — soft and bulky compress, dense items barely do — rather than repeating a vague percentage with no basis.
- Capacity in context. We map cube sizes to what they realistically hold and whether they fit a carry-on, checked against manufacturer dimensions rather than a marketing label.
The scoring rubric
Every product is scored on the same five metrics, 0–10, and the headline score is their mean (so a card's score can never drift from the metrics beneath it):
- Capacity — how much it holds for its footprint.
- Compression — how much usable space the design reclaims (low for regular cubes, by design).
- Build — fabric, zippers, construction and warranty.
- Weight — how light it is empty, which matters most for carry-on and backpacks.
- Value — cost per cube against what you get.
These scores are judgments from documented research — published specs, retailer listings and aggregated owner feedback — not measurements we took in a lab.
What we don't do
Every site in this category leads with a testing claim: "we tested twenty cubes," "we threw suitcases down the stairs," "six months of use." We haven't tested any of these cubes, and we're not going to say we did. Units we claim to have hands-on tested: zero. Free products accepted: zero. Sponsored placements: zero. We'd rather own that plainly than fake a lab we don't have — inventing test results is a violation of FTC endorsement rules and the easiest claim in the world for a competitor to falsify.
What we do instead is the thing none of them offer: publish the method, cite every number, and make the math reproducible. If we say a set costs a certain amount per cube, you can divide the price yourself. If we cite a dimension, the source is linked. That's a stronger basis for trust than an unverifiable testing story.
Prices and freshness
Prices come live from the Amazon Product API and are stamped with the date they were pulled. If a price is more than 48 hours old, the number disappears and the button falls back to "Check price on Amazon" — we never show a stale figure. Amazon's price at checkout is always the one that counts.
Corrections
If a spec is wrong or a manufacturer revises a product, tell us via the contact pageand we'll fix it — we aim to correct factual errors within 48 hours. How commission works and why it never changes a ranking is in our affiliate disclosure and editorial policy.
