How to pack electronics for travel
Chargers and cables are the one category a packing cube handles badly. Here is the pouch system that stops the tangle, the battery rules that are not optional, and what security will ask you to remove.

Electronics break the cube system, and it is worth understanding why. A packing cube is one undivided fabric box, which is exactly right for a stack of folded t-shirts and exactly wrong for nine objects of different densities. Heavy plugs sink to the bottom, cables interleave into a single mass, and the one thing you need is under everything else. The fix is not a smaller cube — it is a different kind of container, plus a set of rules about batteries that are not really optional.
One item, one place
The principle that makes a tech pouch work is that every object has a fixed home. Elastic loops for cables, a dedicated pocket for the plug, a slot for the power bank. That sounds fussy until the first time you are at a gate with a phone at 4% and you pull out the right cable one-handed without emptying anything onto a seat.

Cut the cable count before you pack them
Most people pack more cables than they own devices, because old cables accumulate and none of them ever get thrown away. Lay everything out and ask which device each one charges. A modern kit is often one multi-port charger and two USB-C cables — a single charger with three ports replaces three plugs and takes up less space than one of them.
For the cables you do pack, the reason they tangle is that a loose loop of cable is a lasso waiting for another cable to pass through it. Coil each one, then close the coil with the Velcro tie it came with, a short elastic band, or a bread-bag clip. A closed loop cannot catch another cable. This is the entire mechanism behind why organized cables stay organized.
The battery rules, which are not negotiable
Lithium batteries are the one area of packing where the rules are safety regulation rather than preference, and they are enforced. Power banks and spare lithium batteries must travel in your carry-on, never in checked luggage. The reason is blunt: a battery fire in the cabin can be dealt with by the crew, and one in the hold cannot. Devices with batteries installed — laptop, phone, camera — can technically be checked, but should not be, for the same reason plus theft.
There are also capacity limits. Power banks up to 100 Wh are generally allowed without airline approval; between 100 Wh and 160 Wh usually needs prior airline approval; above 160 Wh is normally refused. Most consumer power banks are printed with their Wh rating; if yours shows only mAh, the arithmetic is (mAh ÷ 1000) × 3.7 = Wh, so a 20,000 mAh bank is about 74 Wh and is fine. Rules do vary by airline and by country, so check your carrier before a long-haul trip — that is a five-minute job, not a guess.
Pack for the security tray, not just for the suitcase
At most airports, laptops and larger tablets come out of the bag and go in a tray on their own. That single fact should shape where they live: a laptop buried under three cubes in the main compartment turns into a queue-holding excavation, while a laptop in a dedicated back-panel sleeve comes out in two seconds. Power banks are increasingly asked for separately too.
Two habits worth building. First, put loose small items — phone, keys, watch — into your bag before the tray rather than into the tray, so there is nothing small to leave behind. Second, count your trays going in, and count the same number coming out. Laptops left at security are almost always the second tray of a two-tray person. Protection: what actually needs it
Tech pouches are organizers, not cases. They keep things findable and give a little padding against scuffs; they will not save a bare hard drive from a real drop. Be honest about which of your items are genuinely fragile — usually a bare SSD, camera lenses, and anything with a glass screen that is not already in a case — and give those a hard case or a padded sleeve of their own. Everything else is a cable and cables are fine.
Where the pouch goes matters as much as what is in it. A tech pouch is dense and rectangular, so it makes a good structural block against the back panel of a backpack, and a poor thing to bury at the bottom under clothes you will not need until the hotel. Adapters, voltage and the thing people confuse
A plug adapter changes the shape of the pins so your plug fits the socket. A voltage converterchanges the electricity itself. These are different products and mixing them up is how devices die. Almost all modern laptop and phone chargers are dual-voltage — the small print on the brick will say something like "input 100–240V" — which means they work anywhere in the world with a shape adapter alone. Hair dryers, straighteners and older appliances frequently are not, and those are the items that need a converter or, more sensibly, leaving at home. Read the brick before you pack it; the answer is printed on it.
The permanently packed pouch
The reliable habit, again: own two pouches. One holds the everyday kit — a cable, a plug, earbuds — and lives in your day bag permanently, never unpacked. The second holds trip-specific gear: camera charger, travel adapter, spare power bank. Because the first one is never emptied, it can never be forgotten, and packing electronics stops being a checklist and becomes picking up a pouch.
